LED Equipment Evaluation Phase I Report

The City of Los Angeles has committed itself to the long-term testing and evaluation of new LED street lighting technology. The Energy Efficiency Division of the Bureau of Street Lighting will continue to evaluate new LED fixtures as they become commercially available.

The fixtures that show the most potential will be chosen to participate in the City’s LED Pilot Project and subjected to field testing for a period of 90 days. Manufacturers that have participated in the LED Pilot Project and meet the Bureau’s most recent LED specifications will be eligible to bid on City contracts.

The equipment, which is the subject of this report, was selected to participate in the first phase of the LED Pilot Project. The following is a summary of the Pilot Project Phase I results. Read full report.

LED Street Lighting Test Project Report

Progress Energy Carolinas (PEC) installed nine LED test fixtures in October, 2008 on the 100 block of East Davie Street in downtown Raleigh in front of the Two Progress Plaza building and other businesses on this block. Two 200-watt and seven 250-watt high pressure sodium (HPS) street light fixtures were removed and nine 167-watt LEDway fixtures from BetaLED were installed on a one-for-one replacement basis using the existing pole locations and mounting height.

Since the installation, PEC has observed the fixtures for proper operation. Light level (footcandle) readings were taken with the HPS and the LED fixtures and a point-by-point footcandle calculation has been prepared for the LED system. Read More

Solid-State Lighting GATEWAY Demonstrations

DOE GATEWAY Demonstrations showcase high-performance LED products for general illumination in a variety of commercial and residential applications. Demonstration results provide real-world experience and data on state-of-the-art solid-state lighting (SSL) product performance and cost effectiveness.

These results connect DOE technology procurement efforts with large-volume purchasers and provide buyers with reliable data on product performance.

Survey Shows Public Feels Safer in City Spaces Lit by LEDs

Two independent surveys of 200 people each were conducted by Mindwave Research, Inc. on behalf of Cree, Inc. to discover if there is a significant perceived improvement in respondent's overall perceptions of a parking garage after the installation of LED lighting. The pre-installation survey was conducted November 11-13, 2006 and the post-installation survey was conducted February 5-8, 2007.
